Questions Re: Rebecca, etc

Post by merryoakparker »

I have a friend who has two older computers and is interested in a dual boot with a Linux Mint distro. I have an ancient IBM Thinkpad which I am trying to install Rebecca on beside Windows XP. It has the extra space on the "massive" 20 Gig HDD, but can it accept Linux Mint 17? It has a 1.1 GHz Intel Chip and 344 mb RAM. I received it as a joke gift one recent Christmas from my son. He paid $15 for it, but it works even if the battery is shot. I have the dvd and also can use Unetbootin for the Cinnamon edition.
If not, is there a repository from which I may download a much earlier version of Linux Mint, perhaps Helen?
Thanks,
Merryoakparker

That is too little RAM for Linux Mint 17.x. All the editions require 512 MB of RAM, with 1 GB RAM recommended for best experience. There are tons of lightweight Linux distros out there for older hardware. If you want recommendations on those, make a topic in the Chat about Linux forums.

I have an IBM Thinkpad X22, its a P3 with 320mb ram, and VectorLinux 7.0 runs flawlessly on it.

Thanks all. Your notes saved me from a futile attempt to install Rebecca on this old beastie. It is for him to see the advantages of Linux. But I thought if a computer could run Windows XP, it surely could run Linux Mint 17. I read about VecorLinux and am downloading it now. Will burn to a cd and see how it runs on.

Thanks.
