beryl, games, is the hardware good enough?

Postby Medic77 on Wed May 02, 2007 10:26 am

I'm planing on buying a refurbished laptop so i can test out all sorts of linux distros and stuff.

The laptop i'm looking at right now has a AMD Turion 64 MK-36 2.0GHz, 1gb of DDR2, and a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100 with 128mb of shared video memory. (I think thats how its listited).

My question is will it be able to run beryl, while playing such games as unreal tournament 3, quake 2, star craft, wolfenstien enemy territory?

If not then what hardware would you recommend. Also keep the price range in the extrema cheap. Like nothing over $600.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

i can run warcraft 3 on my desktop while compiz is running, but i must turn it off to get acceptable performance in quake 4 my hardware is a Core 2 Duo with 1GB ram and geforce 128mb 7300GS
so those games look possible, dont know how good the 6100 is though.

IMHO that card is way too slow for gaming. Also you can tell by the price tag. 600$ is too cheap IMHO for a serious gamer's laptop. Gamer laptops usually cost twice that much, as far as I know.

Also, the AMD CPU: Does it say "AMD 2000+" or something like that? Then the CPU's speed is at 1.5 GHz max. and not 2 GHz. Those "2000+" is marketing speak and means "Our AMD CPU is as fast as a comparable Intel CPU running at 2000 MHz = 2 GHz". Just so that you're warned and know what you are buying ...

is the exact link to the laptop i'm looking at. I dont plan on using it for serious gaming at all. Just to run linux, play star craft, quake 2, and mabe wolfenstien ET. I plan to use it for some light graphic editing, web paging, and maybe a little programming. also to listen to some music and watch some dvd's. I just want to be able to run beryl all the time while being able to play one of those games.
