Have you updated the kernel before this problem occurred?

if it did try booting from the old kernel.
the newer kernel broke a few things.

at boot when the grub menu appears choose the third option.

if you have 2 kernels it should look like this:

Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic
Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic (recovery mode)
Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic
Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic (recovery mode)
Linux Mint, memtest86+

so select "Linux Mint, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic" as this is the original kernel.
