Terminal Codes

Postby pvossen on Thu Jul 05, 2007 2:56 pm

Hey guys,

I have a pretty good working knowledge of terminal. However,
there is so much more I want to do. Plus, even though debian
and Linux Mint installs are easy. You still find times you need
the terminal.

I'm looking for some straight cut terminal pages or books.
Plus, any assistance with alien. As I want to work with files to
convert them to debian. Any suggestions or links?

Thanks ahead of time.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Find a job as UNIX admin ... trust me, you will do *so much more* with the terminal

UNIX for Dummies. Seriously. It's written in a funny way so reading it is even entertaining and yet you learn a lot. It's really a good starting point.

Did you try the manual page? It's quite detailed: man alien

Debian (and thus Ubuntu too) has a very large package selection. Chances are that there are Debian-native *.deb packages for almost everything. Just to mention this.

For everything else, there's
Code: Select all
alien -d whateverpackageyouhas.rpm

It seems like a lot of the Third-Party software you run across are available as either Source tarball, or as RPM, making Alien one nifty little tool.[/code]
