Beryl in Autostart lets everything freeze

Postby splinter on Sat Aug 18, 2007 4:47 am

Hey folks,

I'm quite a noob concerning Linux and now I have a serious problem I can't solve myself. I added Beryl (which was working fine that time) to the autostarting programs for my session. Afterwards I checked the various options to try to enhance beryl's performance. When I tried "force XGL" or sth. like that everything freezed.
My Problem - as you can imagine - is this now: the System freezes everytime it enters X. All I see is my mouse cursor (which I can still move, though) and my wallpaper, no panels, no windows.

Any suggestions how to repair this?!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Welcome to Mint splinter
You could try editing your xorg.conf, but I think that may be a bit difficult in this case.
Start in recovery mode - you select that at boot time.
Be very careful as you are root in recovery mode - don't do anything other than I tell you.
Reconfigure your X-server. Normally the command is
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
but you are already root so don't use the sudo.
I am not sure where you end up doing that - if you end up in a text only terminal - type "exit" - if you find yourself at the desktop - reboot as you then probably are root.

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
