check (or post) your /etc/fstab file and make sure swap is being mounted.

here we is, it appears not to have a mount point :?

Code: Select all
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>
proc            /proc           proc    defaults        0       0
# /dev/sda1
/dev/sda1     /               ext3    defaults,errors=remount-ro 0       1
# /dev/sda5
/dev/sda5     /media/sda5     vfat    defaults,utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0       1
# /dev/sda6
none            swap    sw              0       0
# /dev/sda7
/dev/sda7     /media/sda7     ext3    defaults        0       2
/dev/hdc        /media/cdrom0   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
/dev/fd0        /media/floppy0  auto    rw,user,noauto  0       0

'swap' doesn't need a mount point .... BUT:

alexander wrote:
# /dev/sda6
none swap sw 0 0
... The device name is missing? The entry as written above does not tell the system *which* partition is the swap partition. Correct it should look something like this:
Code: Select all
/dev/sda6   none       swap    sw      0    0

thx boo and scorp123. :)

I was going to just add in the /dev/sda6 bit after looking at the other entries however weren't entirely sure.

Code: Select all
$ free
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       1035732     372540     663192          0      11488     220936
-/+ buffers/cache:     140116     895616
Swap:      2048248          0    2048248

all fixxored :D
