Try mintDesktop->Mounted Volumes...
It will make all volumes disappear. Your CDs and removable mediums too... but when you insert them a window will appear to show their content.

You can also navigate to your desktop folder, select the folder that you do not want to show on your desktop and rename it by putting a period at the beginning of the current name, for instance,,,,,, if the name of an icon on your desktop is /dev/hda6, rename it ./dev/hda6. This will make the folder "invisible" on your desktop but visible in your desktop folder.
