Linux/Unix for Dummies

Postby antiquexray on Wed Oct 24, 2007 4:48 pm

There has been some excellent advice about learning Linux by getting a "Dummies" book and read it. My question is, Linux for Dummies or Unix for Dummies?

The last time I looked at a Linux book it was based on a specific distro, whereas Unix was not. I know Linux is based on Unix, but will there be a lot of info not relevant to Linux in the Unix book? Of course, the other side of the coin, if I buy the Linux one, will there be a lot of info not relevant to Mint?

Thanks.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Well, it depends what you want to do with linux. If you want to do more "technical" stuff like coding, barebones serves, or you really want to know the history or roots of Linux, go for the UNIX book.

But if you want to learn about desktop linux or just linux in general, try a linux book, but not for a specific distro.

Or online can be good.

My favorite websites that are packed with info to help people get started with linux:

http://www.polishlinux.org - great info for beginners and many reviews and suggestions
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu - helpful stuff
http://monkeyblog.org/ubuntu/installing/ - teaches you how to install ANYTHING in ubuntu
http://www.getgnulinux.org/ - for then linux newbie in all of us
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy - great, comprehensive, unofficial guide for ubuntu
http://www.distrowatch.com - amazing. has a "distro page" for each of many hundreds of distros. On each page are the projects website, other helpful sites, short description, links to reviews, package lists, etc.... Also has many reviews and tons of distro news.
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ - great forum, categories for many distros, helpful, fast responses.

and just PM me if you need more websites.
