Upgrading from Edgy to Mint ?

Postby mulsoft on Fri Jan 12, 2007 9:45 am

Hi,

I am really impressed with LinuxMint and would like to upgrade my daughters laptop from Edgy to Linuxmint.

Has anyone done this yet ? I don not want to reinstall to whole distro unless that's the only way to do it.

Repositories are 98% common between ubuntu and linuxmint so there must be some way to get all the codecs and stuff into the Edgy installation.

Otherwise I just backup the homedir to Usb stick and install from cd !

Cheers,

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hi,

There's no upgrade path from Ubuntu to Linux Mint.. although you can use the Linux Mint repository and install mint applications such as mintdisk, mintdesktop..etc on your Edgy platform.

deb http://linuxmint.com/repository/

Edgy and Mint are essentially the same thing. The easiest way to "get all the codecs and stuff", is to use Automatix.

Code: Select all
Edgy and Mint are essentially the same thing.

Sure. And Edgy is essentially the same as Sid... with a brown theme on top of it. And we've been doing "nothing" for the last two months.

- If you want Linux Mint install Linux Mint.
- If you want mintDesktop, mintConfig, mintDisk..etc, add the repository and install them. They're made for Linux Mint but if you're lucky they'll work fine on top of other distributions. (I suppose they "could" work on dapper or edgy or sid or whatever.. not sure about that).
- If you want multimedia codecs for your distribution then install these multimedia codecs the way your distribution recommends.

See, it all depends on what you want. Flyboy_2 does have a point though. If all you're interested in is multimedia codecs for Ubuntu, then Linux Mint is not what you want, what you want is the codecs.. and automatix is one of the ways to achieve that.
