Mint Update Padlock broken

Postby jbf on Tue Nov 20, 2007 3:47 pm

I have just installed Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna, however I cannot get any updates the padlock is always broken with the message "Could not refresh the list of packages"

Also I cannot enable the restricted drivers for my video card. I get the following "W: Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/r ... 0_i386.deb
404 Not Found"

Any ideas as to how i can fix this? thanks.

For mintUpdate,

open a terminal:

cd /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/logs
ls -lrt

And have a look at the file that appears last in the list. This should tell you more about why it can't refresh the list.

If you have any unreachable (i.e., broken sources) in your /etc/apt/sources.lst file, then Mintupdate will not function. This is actually a great feature, rather than a failing of Mintupdate. No apt-get upgrade (or dist-upgrade) should be attempted when one or more sources is unreachable. Since Apt will use cached header lists when new once can't be obtained, it's possible an upgrade will fail to fetch needed files and you'll end up breaking your system. Comment out the non-responding (e.g., error 404) repository and then try Mintupdate refresh again. Your problems should be over. If the non-responding repository should become available again at a later time, you could re-enable it in your sources.list later. Hope this helps.

cmost: What I don't understand is why he gets 404 errors.. follow the links and you don't get a 404, so why does he? Another user is having a similar problem.. I wouldn't mind understanding what's going on.

How do i "Comment out the non-responding (e.g., error 404) repository"?
Thanks again
John

PS
When i first boot up the computer the padlock is unlocked, but NOT broken. When I hover the mouse over the padlock it states that there are 72 packages available for update, however when I click on the padlock it breaks (after a few seconds) with the message "cannot update list of packages."

I had a similar issue. You'll need root permission to do the edit, so

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

The put a # in front of the repository that's failing. Save, and done. My issue was a 3rd party source for some obscure program. Yours in a bit wacky in that all of your repositories seem not to be resolving. Very strange. I think your problem is something more fundamental like your internet connection...

Yes, you are right! I was not able to upgrade anything at all, although the rest of my internet connections were working ok. So I decided to change modems (from a Dlink modem to a Netgear modem) and this has fixed the problem. Updates and everything else now works perfectly. I still don't know why updates do not work with the D-Link modem though.

This from a pure Linux rookie who's been using MINT for less than a day: Try not to overlook the obvious. I wanted to install Skype. Nope. No can do (apparently) until AFTER register, receive and activate a magic link in a confirming email - which has not yet arrived.

I'm experiencing unpleasant issues with Firefox. Seems it's doing its "RAM HOG" thing on this older machine. Opera's a lot snappier, but no version for MINT is listed at the Opera site, and - again, I can't get into the repository until after I activate that link in the confirming email I haven't yet received.

*sigh*

An aside: I'd been running Feisty and decided to try out the new Firefox 3.0 beta. tsk, tsk, tsk... This morning FF refused to launch. Tried rebooting. Multiple files corrupted kept reboot from happening.

You need a confirming email from who? I'm assuming from Skype concerning your account with them? That shouldn't keep you from installing Opera. I'm sure it's in the Mint software repos...

Are you having issue connecting to the internet? Or problems getting mintUpdate to work?

I can connect to the internet, but I cannot download any updates through MintUpdate. It either keeps blinking, or it turns into a broken padlock. When it is a broken padlock, if I place the mouse over the padlock icon, it says it cannot refresh. I also tried running synaptic package manager, but it says it cannot connect to the server. Web, Email, etc. is fine, though...

This is the exact same problem that I did have. There must be something in the setup of the Dlink modem that causes this problem. I changed my Dlink modem to a Netgear and updates now work perfectly. Try changing the modem (you might be able to borrow a modem from a friend) and see what happens.
