Marketing Material??

Now I got a question and I am the one needing help ...

As you may know I work for a certain company (sorry, can't say who ...) and now my boss there wants me to create "marketing material" about all the Open Source products we support (many!). Could be PDF, could be Word documents, could be PowerPoint presentations. Could even be a video clip or something like that.

Let's suppose I do a PDF ... Now the big problem for me is: What do I put in there?

You see, I am a tech support guy, I usually don't deal with this marketing BS. :D

The reason why I have to do this is because we want to create something that would appeal to techie people, geeks, nerds, and those who have had enough of Windows and who'd be willing to switch to Open Source if only they could be convinced that they will get good support there as well .. .

So if I may ask: Imagine you were an admin or an ex-admin and now a manager at a company (someone who decides over IT and tech stuff in the company) and you are considering to switch over to Open Source, you'd even be willing to pay for 24 x 7 support, and all that ...

Now, what would have to be in that PDF (or any other material) so that you'd at least take a look at it and not just throw it away? Technobabble? Nerdy geek talk? The usual marketing blablabla with the usual lies ... ? A mixture of all that?

What would you want to know? What would appeal to you?

I am grabbing for straws here and I'd be glad for any suggestions and pointers :D

Sorry if this is too off-topic

Hey thanks for the suggestions ... A flyer sounds like an idea. Short but sweet, put the rest of the goodies on our web page ...

Dear scorp,

You have to considere 3 things:

The first one is the cost factor. Today it is the marketing argument number 1. If you, as a manager, don't recognize in the instant that you can win money, you will change nothing. So you have to show the biggest cost difference as possible.

The second thing on your little sized appeal document is to show that you know with what kind of software he is working. You are the specialist and understand the needs of your customers. That has to be the message. For instance, "I know you use bla-bla... while you want to realize bla-bla... That's ok and important! And you will be able with me to do the same... with low cost"

The third one is prestige and glamour. The manager wants to show a specifically image to his customers: modern, updated, young, dynamic, in advance etc... You have to find a gimmick that's showing that.

At least, remember that you have to visit him and you will only be able to convince him when you have not given all on your document or flyer, but just enough to excite his interest...

Hope it could help.
