This is a really hard nut to crack.....
There are several threads in the Ubuntu forums about this, one is about 450 posts long!
One possible solution is here
http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showth ... ?p=3852704
in post #406
Another is here, but it's for feisty
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= ... tcount=285
Maybe you can combine them.
I suppose "normal keyboard operation" is possible, it's just the special functions you want access to
I don't have a G15, but rather a more standard Logitech cordless, I don't think I should try any of that as I can't test.
Take it as a learning experience - if you go slow and methodical I think you can make it. In the process you'll see the power of the terminal :)

Thanks EnvoyRising
That's exactly what you find in the links I gave only spelled out and that's helpful

Don't be sorry - you are much more detailed in your answer.
There is something odd going on with "time" in this forum - it's happened several times to me that two answers not knowing each other appears even if the posts are half an hour apart
Ouch what sloppy language - but it's understandable I hope :)

Skönt att det inte blev ett riktigt kernel fel! :)
And now that you've discovered that the terminal doesn't bite you you're much better off in case something needs fixing
