scanning - how to?

I have a scanner but have failed to find a programme to run it. Tried searching for SANE, a GNU scanning programme, on synaptic but nothing came up. Is there any other programme I can install?

Try xsane

sudo aptitude install xsane

Most USB scanners work out of the box.
