Mobile Phone?

Postby hillsy on Fri Nov 04, 2011 12:28 pm

This is actually Mint-related, honest :)

I have an old iPhone 3G. I run Mint as my primary OS (on a ThinkPad) and most of my mail, calendar etc is kept on Google. Music is currently on a Mac because that's what I used to use and it syncs nicely with the iPod bit of my phone.

Anyway, it's time to upgrade the iPhone 3G to something a little more modern. Does anyone have any recommendations for a handset that works particularly well with Mint? I like iPhones, but I've no problem with going Android. Most of my stuff is in the cloud so should work on most devices, but something that syncs music and podcasts with Banshee without too much fiddling would be a definite bonus.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I'd steer clear of iphones because I've heard you cant change the memory cards or batteries if you need to - also I think I saw something at the reg where apples admitted the battery on the new iphone isnt all that great.

Suppose it depends what you plan on using it for - my phone is only a basic entry level touch screen - it has a great battery life plenty of room for mp3s & can be used to recover / take control of a PC by booting it in to Puppy Linux
I've fixed Windows, tried running with Jackalopes, fought Koalas & now, I'm addicted to Mints

Cheers Steve. My needs aren't too onerous so I don't really need the latest wizzy dual core thing. Mostly mail, calendar, BBC news, a bit of social networking.

I also haven't had any issues with battery or storage on my current iPhone - 3yrs and going strong. It's just it's a bit slow/low memory for more modern apps and versions of Apple's OS. But I've heard some people are less happy with it.

I think I might try and pick up a second-hand iPhone 4. In many ways I'd prefer something a bit more open, but I've never had an actual problem with an iPhone (touch wood...)
