poor performance with fresh and up2date installation?

Post by Guybrush »

hi there,

i came across linuxmint, and i really like it. after installing it on my box (specs below) i encountered some performance problems, especially when watching movies on youtube or similar sites.
i always open 3 or more tabs in firefox to be able to watch the movies without interruption (watching the first one, the others are loaded in the background). this makes ff behave like it is installed on a 400mhz machine.

here is some informatin about my system:

is there anybody who can give me some advice how to tune my system in generell/how to tune my system in that special case?
any help is greatly apreciated.

except this: until now, linuxmint looks good (i especially like the debian/ubuntu-base and apt-support). good work...

I've seen you have:

Code: Select all

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc R420 JI [Radeon X800PRO]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc R420 [Radeon X800 PRO/GTO] (Secondary)
So, do you have the propietary driver or the free one? If you have the free one try the propietary and see if the problem solves. And also, can you see videos fine in Totem, without performance issues? And finally, do you have dual-monitor? Because I don't know what means the '(Secondary)'.

One way when you can check the driver you're using is in the Menu > Administration > Display and Graphics > Video Card (maybe the translation is not accurate because I use the system in spanish). If you see the driver is 'ati' then you're using the free one with no accerelation, and if it is 'fglrx' then you're using the propietary. And in order to install the propietary driver use envy or just in a terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
Finally, I'm not pretty sure of this. But X takes one of the monitors as the main one, and the other is used to have another display to view. This implies that one should may have all the accelerated graphics, and the other just the minimun to see the desktop. So perhaps you're using the main one, as the secondary and vice-versa, and because of this, your performance problems. But I am not pretty sure. I know this happened in old editing stations (I used them in my University) in which if you put the video preview window on the secondary monitor it just didn't play properly. But I don't know if the problem still persists.
