Hello to everybody from a new linux user :-)

Post by aposaric »

Hy folks I just wanted to say hy to everybody.

My name is Andrija, I live in Croatia and I am 30. I am an architect and designer and i specialised architectural 3d visualisations. I run a number of rendering nodes under windows 7 because I use 3dMax and Vray for my work, but it is getting quite expensive because I have my own company, and I can't afford the software anymore, it costs me around 25.000 euros to have a legal software on all my rendering nodes. For the last 3 weeks I have extensively researched which linux to install, and I have tried a lot of them :-) I really like ubuntu 12.04 but I wanted to try Mint aswell. Currently I run mint 13 cinamon maya, as I am writing this I am instaling latest updates.

First impresion is really good. There has been some problems with ati drivers ( every distro I tried has initial hicups, but I managed to sort it all out ) I run two 42" lcd monitors on my main workstation so there is allways some tweaking to be sorted.

I am going to ditch 3dmax and I am going to start to learn how to use Blender. First impression is, well, mixed feelings, it is not really inituitive as I hoped it to bee, but I will just have to learn how to use it. I have around 15 years of experience with all kinds of visualisation software so I hope that I will get by :-)

I have only one question, what is better to use, Ubuntu 12.04 Studio edition or Mint 13 cinamon maya for extensive 3d work? They are not so fast as I hoped them to be, but I am not booting them from an ssd so there might be a sloow boot time ( around 60 seconds )

Well, I am really excited I finaly entered the linux world, there is going to be a steep learning curve, that is for sure, and I hope that I will be able to contribute to the comunity, in one way or another.

I look forward to speaking to you

cheers

andrija

hi andrija, welcome to Mint.

There shouldn't be much difference. Ubuntu Studio has Blender and other relevant programs installed by default (see http://ubuntustudio.org/tour/), but these can be added to Mint 13 very easily via Synaptic Package Manager or the Software Manager. The Cinnamon version is heavier on resources than Xfce, but you have powerful machines, so it won't make significant difference. regards

Hi Andrija, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Thanks for joining the forums!

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews), and the Cinnamon Spices website for adding even more themes, applets and extensions to Cinnamon.

You can also chat in real-time with other Linux Mint users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-chat for general chat and #linuxmint-help for support with other Linux Mint users.

Have fun with Linux Mint.
