from LMDE to Debian, a long journey home

Hello from Croatia! I have begun my adventure in GNU/Linux with LM 11, one year ago. After several attempts with Live DVD and USB, I decided to install it as my only OS. It served me well for couple of months, I was satisfied, but then I decided to take the next step and opted for LMDE. Somehow I don't like Ubuntu (it's not just because of Unity) and I also preferred a rolling distro.
It was just last week when I made another important step in my brief GNU/Linux career and I passed through the big upgrade, from UP 4 to UP 5, without any trouble. I don't believe it's my merit, though, it's because of great work done by the Mint developers. I am happy with LMDE, Mate is an excellent choice for me, but I admit one day my heart will be at ease when I finally settle with Debian.
I do believe in your work, because you have offered us a great distro, with excellent tutorials and many kind people willing to help. However, I regard LMDE as a 'little Debian', which is fine and helps me to learn about some 'big brother's' whims. So, I am here to learn, slowly but steadily, before going on. At the end, let me introduce my hardware:

Yeah, I use LMDE as my 'stable' system. All of the other linux OSes that I use are just for fun. I always end up booting up in LMDE to get my work done.

Hi rudar, welcome to the Linux Mint forums :D Thanks for joining the forums!

Be sure also to check out the Community website (ideas, tutorials, and hardware and software reviews). You can also chat in real-time with other LMDE users. In the Mint Menu, in the Internet section, start the application XChat IRC. You will automatically get connected to #linuxmint-debian for support with other LMDE users. You can also type "/join #linuxmint-chat" to join the chat channel.

Have fun with Linux Mint.

Hello everybody! Thank you for your kindness (at the very beginning, a very useful tip from Vincent). I am just a modest user, but it makes me proud to be a member of the Mint community. Although I admit I am here mostly because I am still very insecure about installing pure Debian, I will definitely use this opportunity to learn more. And I will definitely spread the word about LMDE, inviting others to join us. So, I am looking forward to our little adventure. Cheers!

Hi all,

I am from Hong Kong. LM mate 32 bit is my first choice till now as a substitue for Windows 7. I really hate win 7 for its time consuming update which hinders me from turning of my computer on and off.
Though I also found some issues for updating the LM mate, I still find it simple and stable enough for my daily works.

Thanks for the crew for developing LM which I found linux is really usable as a desktop distro other than Windows.

Thanks!

Hello, VincentHo. I opened this topic to introduce myself and you followed in my footsteps, instead of opening your own topic. Also, you apparently don't use LMDE. But never mind, welcome! I am inviting you to join me on LMDE.

Just for the record: it's time to say goodbye to Mint...

I enjoyed more than three years with this excellent distro, first with LM 11 (Katya was the first distro I installed on my then brand new desktop), and subsequently with LMDE. But I always kept an eye on pure Debian, watching its progress, comparing experiences of other users and reading a lot of interesting stuff (including some on human relations as well).

The recent appearance of LMDE 2 finally gave me a much needed excuse to switch to Debian. I must say I liked very much LMDE as it used to be, a semi-rolling distro that had to be installed only 'once in the lifetime', with upgrades coming more or less regularly every six months. Mint developers must have had very good reasons to abandon this path and to introduce LMDE 2, with a working cycle of three (or five) years.

The number of developers who actively contribute to LMDE may be too small (as Clem used to complain in some interviews I've read), or the leaders of the project have simply decided that LM as the main branch of this great distro deserves more attention. Other users are perhaps satisfied with this change, more so for many people used to complain that LMDE was becoming obsolete. I did not agree with them upon this point, especially because depositories of this new LMDE 2 stem from Debian Stable, instead from Debian Testing, as it used to be. So, this time I did not see any point to continue with LMDE and I installed Debian. I felt I have learned enough, thanks to LMDE.

I would have moved to Debian sooner or later, one way or another. I have opted for Stable, for the time being, but I am planning in subsequent years to turn myself first to Testing, and finally to Syd.

Everyone of us who were (or still are) the users of LM should be sincerely grateful to Clem and his merry men. You do a great job. You provided stability and a rich variety of packages, gave me a lot of time to learn more about Debian. Everything was nicely polished, so I understand perplexity and dissatisfaction of some users who complain on Mate forums that they miss the elegant Mint Mate menu while using Debian. There may be more liberty, but also more responsibility with Debian, and I feel as I have become ready to accept it.

During past three and a half years of using LMDE almost on daily basis, both for work and for entertainment, I did not have practically any serious problem. If I had to seek your help on this forum, you were always there to give me a hint, or the entire solution. I wish people on Debian forums were so cooperative like you... you spoiled us a bit. To all developers of Mint I wish a lot of success and many new editions! Farewell from rudar

Goodbye...as the wizard said, we'll be here. :)

I ran Sid myself for about 2 months. Quit nice. I recently got new hardware, and I'm in the process of reinstalling Sid on my old machine, so you'll have the company of a Mint user in your Debian adventure. :)
BTW: If you join the Debian forums, I'm there as Fred Barclay as well.

Thank you all, folks, you are amazing! I feel a bit ashamed

@Fred Barclay

Yes, I am already there, on Debian forums. I am rudar (i. e. miner, who works hard and digs deeply enough... seeking for precious knowledge). Kudos to Mint, I know where to return, if Debian ever breaks apart.
