Hello Everyone

Postby Derek_S on Sat Dec 28, 2013 7:08 pm

I've been meaning to join the forum for some time. After unsuccessfully trying to dual boot Windows 8 and Linux on my HP Envy DV7 more than once, and not being too eager to reinstall Windows 8 for the fourth (or maybe fifth) time, I recently bought a refurbed Lenovo Thinkpad T400 to use as a Linux testbed. Installation of Mint 16 Petra 64 bit went without a hitch, a huge improvement over the previous OS, Windows Vista. :D

So far I've tried openSUSE, Zorin OS7, and Linux Mint. I'm not a complete noob, but I'll admit there are a lot more people who know a lot more than I do. I'll be glad to help out where I can, and I'm always willing to learn. See you all out on the forum.

Welcome to Linux Mint. If you happen to experience the boot problem you had again, then try out Boot-Repair at this link:

@roblm - I did use yannubuntu boot repair the last time I tried to dual boot. Funny thing - I was able to boot back and forth all day, Windows to Mint, Mint to Windows, no problems. Must have done it at least a dozen times. Then I shut down, went to bed, the next morning I booted to the grub prompt. No amount of tinkering could get either Windows or Mint to boot. So I ran my system rescue USB that I created with Macrium Reflect, and managed to save Windows. Still scratching my head over what went wrong, any ideas?

Boot-Repair does not always work. I've experienced this in 1 out of about 8 uses.
Your computer probably came with Windows 8 using UEFI mode to boot, instead of BIOS mode, and with Secure Boot and
Fast Boot enabled. All of these features make Linux installation more difficult. The link below explains this well. The Boot Repair
utility is also covered.

@roblm - I thought I did everything correctly, went into BIOS and disabled Secure Boot, left UEFI enabled. Also went into Power Management and disable Fast Startup. Then used yannubuntu boot repair as I mentioned previously. I think I'm just another victim of the secret pact between Microsoft, HP, and the Devil himself.

Also, I have visited Roderick Smith's webpages in the past, he is probably the most knowledgeable person on the subject. My problem is finding enough time to read everything then try it.
