Hello! I'm promoting LM in my local community

Postby xerion567 on Sun Mar 30, 2014 1:03 am

Hello everyone!

Many folks in my local community here in Colorado are in need of help- their Windows XP boat is sinking! They are dreading having to spend $$$ to jump to the next Windows boat, replacing their perfectly good computers. As this area borders on rural territory, nobody has ever heard of Linux  but no worries, I'm making the case that there is an alternative: Linux Mint! :)

I've been volunteering to help folks make the transition around here, so far so good. As with everything computers I do run into issues here and there which I hope I can resolve with the help of this forum. No. 1 question so far is "does it run Office/Word/Excel?" No.1 issue so far is printers, Linux just doesn't like those printers!

Anyhow, if anyone has some advice about helping people with the transition please speak your mind! I'd like to get some thoughts on backups (and backup software), the upsides and downsides of making the switch, and some answers for the question: "who made Linux Mint and why? Especially if it wasn't for money."

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Welcome to Linux Mint, and the Mint forums.

Linux uses Libre Office, which is very much like MS Office. Most MS user's find the transition pretty easy.
Also, you did not tell us what version of Linux Mint you are using, and what version you are installing for your friends. It makes a difference to answer questions about printers and other stuff.
http://www.linuxmint.com/teams.php This will show you the Linux Mint team, Clem being the Project Leader, as for why it's made without cost, well most Linux distro's
follow the open source GNU system which you can google and get a little history on.
