"Grüezi" from Switzerland

Postby GuyD on Fri Jun 06, 2014 8:42 pm

Grüezi, which means greet you, is the traditional way to say hello in the german speaking part of Switzerland where I came from. I am 41 years old, male, and live near Zurich. I worked in the travel industry, but at the moment I am looking for something new.

It's said that an old dog like me doesn't learn new tricks. Despite that, I want to try it anyway! Which means in my case, that after ten years of using Windows XP I probably, nah quite sure, will change to Linux. I want to honest to you, I was satisfied with XP: it's stable, there's a lot of software and I know how to use it. But as we all know, Microsoft let it die last April (thanks Bill!), so I have to do something. My seven year old laptop still runs, well not as good as when it was new, but it works (but not with Windows 7 or 8 ). So I don't see a reason to throw my computer away and buying a new one. I have better ideas what to do with the money! Please keep your fingers crossed that the change will work, thanks!

Well, that's all for the moment I think. See you!

Hello again Guy,

Switzerland! Those who listen hear nice things about Switzerland.

Although born in the U.S. I saw the Matterhorn when I was seven (some 62 years ago!); it, and other things of Europe, and of other times in Europe, remain with me as good memories.

On your mention of XP: no more than 10 minutes ago I had the thought that I've (probably) installed my last instance of XP; even when I find myself confused about Linux things I know there are the kind of answers that I can work with whereas in the Windows world, even though I know quite a bit of it, and even after 25 years, it been sort of disconnected bits with new waves of fog regularly rolling in.

Here's a post you might like to read once you get Linux installed -> post.

Welcome to Mint Linux, and our forum.

with a puter of that age I would be inclined to use either the Mate or Xfce desktop as cinnamon is unlikely to run on it, I have a what is now 12 yr old acer 1.5 celaron running the mate desktop.
