Hiya

Hello! I've been lurking for a week or so, and I'm really impressed by how friendly and knowledgeable everyone is, so I thought I'd join up.

I've always had an interest in Linux, used a Knoppix live CD here and there, but was intimidated by what I assumed would be a difficult install and lack of hardware support (and no games!). Luckily, Windows 8 came out and that was all the motivation I needed to get over my fear of Linux. I downloaded LM, and was really surprised by how easy it was to install and get software for the few things it didn't come pre-loaded with. I was downright shocked that my wireless headset worked immediately, because even after installing drivers on Windows I know people have issues with those.

I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan with the US Army, working as a liaison (which is a synonym for sinecure, as it turns out). I don't have a lot of time to spend playing with LM, but I am able to do research on bash and the like (any recommendations for other things I should research to help me with Linux?). I have a degree in psychology, and had planned on getting a masters in human factors when I got out of the army, but LM has rekindled my interest in computers and now the plan is to get a degree in computer science first. I hope that many years down the line I can use human factors to help make the things about Linux that are still difficult and confusing more intuitive and available for inexperieneced users (like myself).

Thanks in advance for helping me with all the stupid questions I will surely ask!

Hello Incurian,

What are "human factors"? That sounds like a name someone could give to humans encountering a domain, from a point of view either inside that domain or elemental to it.

Elsewhere, If you have questions you think someone here could answer, ask; it would be a mistake not to

As for a subject to research, I've a suggestion for a good place to start if you've not backed up your system yet: open a terminal session in another window, log in as root using su, and follow the instructions found here

Welcome to the Mint Linux forums! :)

I like to think of it as "cognitive ergonomics," if that makes more sense. Thank you for the recommendation, I will try that next time I have a minute. And thanks to everyone else for the welcome.
