trialing Linux Mint-17

Post by sd90mach »

Now that M/soft have stopped supporting XP Home I feel that it is time for a change. I was going to trial Ubunto, but a good friend said to trail the above program, so far so good.
A couple of questions.
What Internet security is available or is it already built in.
On the existing desk top I use a program called Webshots, which allows me to set up screen savers and backdrops which can be adjusted to cycle through any images that you put into it. Is there a similar piece of software for Linux.
When I make the descion to do a full install how much of the prevous windows files, i.e. images and games will I lose. The lot or should I do a full back up of what ever files I wish to retain.
Thatś all for the moment.
Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to Linux!! :D

1. Linux is security. You don't need an antivirus on Linux. Enable the firewall and you are good!
2. You can have the screensaver run through the pictures folder.
3. You will have to back up all files before you install, as installing will completely wipe the hard drive. Keep in mind Windows software (most games) will not run on Linux. All of your files should work fine.

What are the specs on the computer? If it has XP than I'm guessing the hardware is older too. In this case I would recommend using the "Mate" version of Linux Mint 17.

Hi guyś thanks for your answeres. You have confirmed what I suspected. To the person who queried the age of my laptop, it is a NEC VERSA E3100. A oldy but a goody. Will only run Windows XP. Did try and installed Windows 7 but that was a big mistake!!

Welcome to Mint and to the forum !

Mint 17 Mate or xfce would be the best choices for your computer, in my opinion.

You definitely want to run the Mate version on that computer.
