Hi everyone, as an ex windows user for years i made the switch to linux mint16 when xp support finished. I always got windows software supplied as part of my job but now I have to pay for it i seem to have gone off it all together. Mint 16 cinnamon was easy to install from a usb stick . The only difficulty I have is printing using my old brother laser printer. Any way my sister in law has an old laptop wth xp on it and i was volunteerd into installing mint on it. So I downloaded mint 17 and thought I may as well upgrade 16 to mint ver17 on my HP dv9500 before getting to grips with the SILs laptop.
It didnt work, I get the countdown to start mint then the the screen goes black for a few seconds then a white rectangle appears and thats all that happens. I have to switch off as the laptop wont respond to any key. Any suggestions on how to solve this would be appreciated as I am going to the SILs next Friday and want to get the installation done with the minimum of fuss as she worries about everything.
good morning all

Welcome to the Mint family forums
depending on the spec of your SIL's machine which flavour is needed, many older xp machines will not run Cinnamon as they have insufficient graphics try Mint with mate or Xfce desktops they are less demanding on older machines
