A happy new user of Linux

Postby Blazer867 on Mon Jul 28, 2014 12:59 am

Hello, all. I just recently installed Linux Mint 13 (with Cinnamon) on a second-hand laptop, and so far I am loving it. I'm in a household that used to use strictly Windows products, but we're quickly converting to Linux. Not only is it fast and clean, but the design itself is amazing. I'm experiencing some slight difficulties with the firewall but aside from that, the whole system is great.

I'm a web designer and jack of all trades (master of none). Nice to meet you folks!

Hi and welcome.
Mint17 is more demanding on the hardware (that's why it looks "nicer").
What are the hardware specs of this second hand laptop?
People disagree with me. I just ignore them.

Processor: 1.83GHz / 1000.00MHz
1GB of RAM
70GB of harddrive memory

I chose Mint13 partly because it was recommended by someone else in my household and because my laptop isn't state-of-the-art, but mostly because I like older versions of things; the bugs are usually worked out, and people generally have more experience with them. From what I've seen, Mint13 is comparable to last year's Chromebooks, visually. I do intend to upgrade eventually, but for the meantime 13 was the most accessible and seems to be a solid system. I'm definitely liking it so far.

dosn't look powerful enough to run Cinnamon desktop, should be ok with Mate desktop, but i would be inclined to use XFCE desktop.

So far it seems to be doing okay with Cinnamon, but there's a definite overheating issue and it tends to freeze up if I have more than two tabs open on Firefox. I'll try the Mate environment and see if it works better.
