New to Mint!

After using Ubuntu for years I decided to use Mint instead! I had Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and wanted to use something more current and supported - and glad I did!

I got sick of how commercial Ubuntu was getting and although I don't mind Unity (still use Ubuntu 12.04 in a virtual machine) I like the Mate much better!

An unexpected benefit of the new install. After a clean install of Mint 17 we I noticed a huge difference in the quality of sound! I was looking at hardware options to solve the problem with dead, muddy sound - but Quiana unexpectedly improved it incredibly!
The PC is AMD Phenom II 955 and Gigabyte motherboard. So it should have had good sound. I'm not an audiophile but I know good sound when I hear it! I play through a decent receiver and speakers. Likely I would have had the same benefit from the latest Ubuntu, but a good reason to keep current. Also, my Android devices now mount properly.

The system has 5 hard drives. 4 for data and 1 for the OS. I left the drives in place and chose the drive with the OS to install Qiana. Interesting that it was unable to install GRUB. So I tried Debian Wheezy and Ubuntu 14.04 - same problem. After removing 4 of the 5 hard drives Mint 17 installed successfully. After install I updated FSTAB, hooked up the 4 data drives and it works great!

So it's like having a new computer with Quana - and the Phenom II 955 is still going strong!
