Linux Mint user coming back after 10 years!

Post by Matoro »

Hi everyone! The first time I made this post when I was having a difficult time with my graphical settings on my computer. I never really got to formally introduce myself. Lol!

I recently switched from Windows 8 to Linux Mint about a month ago, and so far I am liking the OS! It is a bit buggy in some parts, and games runs a bit choppy (compared to Windon'ts 8). But I guess those are the sacrifices I have to make when making over to the transition from Windows to Linux. One thing for sure is that Mint 17 is a whole lot better than compared when I was using it 10 years ago. :) Yes, I was one of those hipster 12 year olds who thought Linux was cool to use at the time and no one knew what I was talking about! Lol!

As for myself; Birds, Running, and LEGO are my hobbies. And Bionicle (2001-2007) is my favorite LEGO theme. Hence "Matoro" is my username. Any Bionicle fans here? I'm usually active in the Mask of Destiny (Bionicle Fan Site) forums, you can find me there! :D On the 'computer/media' side, I also like to game and love to post videos some random stuff on YouTube. Whether its gameplays or other cool stuff. Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/MAT0R0

I don't think I will be active on the forums too often, but I will be coming here to look for advice/help, and checking the latest updates of software discussions.

Speaking of advice, I am looking into investing some free time in learning to use a video editor for Linux. I was wondering if you guys may know of any apps that would be best for me to check out? (Preferably medium skill level) I've noticed that Openshot and Kdenlive has been brought up a lot, but has anyone used Lightworks? Out of all of them, what would you say is more reliable and easy to use? I'm planning to make some stop motion videos and gameplay montages soon! Especially since Bionicle is being brought back in 2015! :)

Welcome aboard, Matoro! I needed to create a video one evening and I installed and tried probably every video editor I could find in the Mint repositories. I wound up creating the video using OpenShot. That was the only one I could figure out by stumbling around until I got it to work. Might be a different story if I had read the manuals on any of them.

Thanks Jimallyn, I've been using Openshot to do simple editing like splicing. That's what I've used recently to cut some parts out in my Destiny gameplays. But I've noticed it is not really useful when it comes to key shortcuts. (like "x" is not trim, compared to most video editing software). But it gets the job done.

I've been browsing around the Mint forums, and it seems like I would most likely be hanging around in the Linux Gaming category more often.
