updating synaptic

Hi there.My name is Robert Howard I am 75 years old (or is that young?) And I am having a problem. I just installed Linux my computer and I keep gettig thhis message after I refersh Synaptic. It tells me It cannot fetch items from the providers. I followed the instructions that i found in the termal. but also no help. Can someone please tell me
how I can install the items i need for upgrades and up loads.

dont know if this will work [did for me] go menu....all applications.... software sources.. and click the restore default button

If you are having trouble fetching updates in Synaptic, it is possible that you installed a version of Mint which is old and no longer supported. Which Mint did you install? 16? 17?
