New here

Post by morphias »

Hello, im new here.

I've had a computer since the age of four and like most people was introduced to Windows ... 98. Back then I mainly used the computer for gaming and such until I hit high school. In high school I started to learn how to write my own games and software using Microsoft .NET technologies. However my computer science teacher in high school introduced me to the concept of Linux so back then I tried Ubuntu 8.04. My dad, didn't like me messing with other OSs so he ended up removing it and telling me there is more money to be made with Microsoft technology.
However now i'm no longer living with my parents and about 2 years ago when Windows 8 pretty much launched, I played around with it and when I saw the direction Microsoft was moving with their Operating System I was forced to consider two options - buy a Mac, or find a linux distro I like. So I tried Fedora, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint along with all of the popular desktop environments. I kinda didn't find comfort with the RPM based distros for package management and hunting down software seemed a bit more tedius than Debian based distros. So for about a year I was on Ubuntu for at the time when I tried Linux Mint, I didn't find myself comfortable with it.... until about a month ago I got so fed up with the crash dialogs popping up on the LTS release that I decided to force myself to find comfort with linux mint. So I downloaded the Cinammon version of 17.1 64 bit and I started to release i liked that cinnamon is more customizable than Unity. I uploaded a picture of my desktop.

I do love to program but learning GTK# in MonoDevelop is kindof annoying. I am trying to get the Panels to act more like the Panels from WinForms but its not working out.

A link to my layout configuration can be found http://postimg.org/image/njspp130h/ since it was too big to upload.

I also bought some Linux Mint stickers for my laptop to make it look "Linux Branded" :D

Interesting story you have there, morphias. I quite enjoyed reading your small blurb about your history with getting into Linux. I, myself was always hesitant when I was using Windows. It came to a halt one time where I got really fed up with Windows, it's bloated system, it 's convoluted and labyrinth ways of navigating yourself around the system that I gave up on it one day and installed Ubuntu on the desktop. I haven't looked back since I also tried out other Linux distros. As a matter of fact, the DellXPS laptop I have now had Windows 8 on it. ....for about a week or so, till I wiiped it out, installed Linux on it and continue to this day. Welcome to the LM forums.

*** From a technical point of view it’s no longer tied to the Ubuntu schedule, so it could be released at any time, there’s no technical relevance between 14.10 and 17.1. Now, with that said, the 6 months cycle gave us rhythm and although quality and content dictate releases going public or being held back more so than dates or vague deadlines, the idea of a late November release is still there within the team and it helps us working towards that target.

Looking for app...

Thank you all for the warm welcomes. Lots of useful information too.

Is there an app that tells you how much battery an application is using (like the android does)? I have tlp installed but I want to find a way to find a way to really make my laptop last a while. I was almost tempted to use a terminal session earlier today....
