Greets to everyone!! Mint Linux user here from early Slack days...previously dual booted, but its been 5yrs or more since I gave the other OS(Win) a send-off.
I've even mounted that previously insurmountable hurdle of having the wife use Linux...with Mint and PlayOnLinux she never knew the difference.
The package system and software available is the paramount device that made me switch from Slack. I love Slackware but software and package maintaining were becoming onerous. Plus the fact they changed to KDE as their install distro. Die-hard Gnome fan. At least Mint gives back the choice that so many others are seem to be taking away.

Is that "Family" as in "G-rated" or family as in extended distro?The-Wizard wrote:Welcome to the Mint family forums

From a technical point of view it’s no longer tied to the Ubuntu schedule, so it could be released at any time, there’s no technical relevance between 14.10 and 17.1. Now, with that said, the 6 months cycle gave us rhythm and although quality and content dictate releases going public or being held back more so than dates or vague deadlines, the idea of a late November release is still there within the team and it helps us working towards that target.
