I think I'm in love..

Postby dibbs on Sun Jan 02, 2011 12:48 am

Hey everyone!

I've been playing around for a few hours now (never used Linux before) and I have to say I am just.. happy =) Coming from windows 7, Mint is making me all giddy, playing around with themes and such, the cube thing, docky, listening to some tunes, downloading a few torrents, set up pidgin, firefox.. life is good.

I'd really like to drop windows for good even after this little time, however, I like to game on occasion.. any recommendations? I have a new laptop coming soon and I was thinking about installing windows on maybe 150-200gb partition and allocating the rest for Mint and just booting into windows when I want to game.. but is there a better way of doing this? Thanks!

I would recommend a dual boot. Install Windows first, then Mint. So you can get the best of both worlds.

My suggestion for continued gaming is:

buy a Playstation & a decent TV !!!

I am semi-serious here! I have never understood the need for people to belt their poor old computer to death simply to play games on it; let alone pay good money to keep upgrading their hardware just because some gaming company says they have to or the experience won't be as good?? Especially when there are specialist alternatives available in the marketplace? Online gaming is a different kettle of fish of course; there it's the bandwidth getting flogged?

I admit to being a heavy gamer myself - I play the odd game of solitaire or mahjongg when waiting for my COMPUTER to compile a program or decode a video etc. You know, something computers do!!!

Don't worry, this is only a tongue-in-cheek rant :) . Dual boot is the way to go if you really want to do this; just boot into Windows for game playing and do real stuff in Linux. Just ask here for guidance if you are unsure what to do - after you have searched the forums of course - there are some excellent guides on here.

Welcome, cheers,
rhodry.

Welcome to the Mint forums dibbs. You will find a lot of information and help from some very enthusiastic and knowledgeable Mint users. I'm sure you will also want to visit our Mint Community Website at http://community.linuxmint.com/. You will find real-time help in our IRC channels. Just go to Menu>Internet>XChat IRC and when you open it you will automatically be taken to our #linuxmint-chat and #linuxmint-help channels. Have fun with Mint.

I have to agree with the posts above suggesting dual-booting. If you really want to use your computer for gaming, keeping a Windows partition is the best option in my opinion.
