I haven't used Linux for eight (?) years - I played with SUSE Linux for a bit.
What a difference in that time! I have Linux Mint in use - well, three hours use. It's snappy, even from a USB stick.
I am no stranger to Firefox and Thunderbird, and my IMAP mai is hosted by www.fastmail.fm
- has been for years.
Open Office Writer I am just as likely to use as MS Word. I don't have much use for the other stuff.
I am into computer audio and run two Squeezeboxes and a Beresford Caiman DAC.http://www.beresford.me/main/main.html
For the HiFi buffs the DAC drives directly a refurbished Quad 405-2 power amp into a pair of large German speakers M Quart 980s.
I have recently retired from the British Army and now spend most of the year in Cyprus. My only TV access is via BBC iPlayer which I run by VPN back to a UK agent. Workis in Windows 7.
I have raised a question elsewhere on the forum about HDMI sound. I need to sort that before even trying to get iPlayer working in Linux.
