LMDE rocks!

Post by carltm »

I've been using Linux for so long that I don't even remember when I started.

At first the distro of choice was easy to pick...Slackware. You could easily
download all the floppies you needed at 300 baud and install Linux on any
386 PC. To me Slackware and Linux meant the same thing, and I didn't
care that other distros were being developed.

That was until I went to a LUG meeting and saw a demo of Red Hat Linux
version 4.something. I was impressed by the slick ncurses interface and
the great management tools. Once I got settled in with RH, I thought I
probably wouldn't change distros...

Until Red Hat Linux disappeared. I went through a tough time trying many
distros and finally picked Debian. I really liked the fact that Debian was
so stable, but you could get the latest version of almost any program from
the testing repo. It was more work than I liked setting up my desktop, but
it worked well.

Life was okay, until I saw CentOS used on a desktop. Again I was impressed
by the management tools. And after discovering several new repos, I found
it was rather easy to set up a nice CentOS desktop that did everything I
wanted.

But recently I've run across several programs that are available for Debian
but not in the CentOS repos. In fact some of them required either the
latest kernel or newer versions of system libraries. I was just thinking
that I wish someone would just put a front end on Debian to make it easier
to set up a desktop system that didn't involve Ubuntu. That's when I heard
a podcast about LMDE.

Let's just say that I'm hooked. My thanks to everyone who worked on LMDE!

Welcome carltm! You're right, the distro does take away the pain of setting up a nice Debian desktop. I hope you'll have occasion to share some of your knowledge picked up on the various distros you have used. You can't beat experience when it comes to helping others.

Best regards...
