How soon is "soon, thereafter"? 3.2 was released on September 28.vrkalak wrote: The next Update-Pack is waiting for Gnome-3.2 to be released into 'testing' ... then it will be ported to LMDE.
Update-Pack-4 should be released - soon, thereafter.

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
Whenever gnome 3.2 was released is "irrelevant" when it comes to the update packs. What the mint developpers will do is wait till all of Gnome 3.2 moves from Sid to Testing. They don't have a say in that (at least not as mint developpers), though: this decision is made upstream. When the debian developpers think that Gnome 3.2 can be in Testing repositories, it will be. The decision of the mint developpers to wait that Gnome 3.2 is completely in Testing before releasing a now update pack is a conservative one. They probably think that waiting for that to happen will minimize, ideally abolish, some discrepancy between dependencies that might arise if they decide not to wait.
I think that's the reason why they are waiting.

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
When I upgraded to update pack 3 my system kept booting the 2.6.39-2 kernel. To force it to boot 3.0.0-1 I went into the package manager and removed (not completely removed) everything to do with 2.6.39-2 and updated grub. When I did this foomatic-db-engine was removed. After reboot I reinstalled it which removed cups, cups-driver-gutenprint, cups-pdf, mint-meta-common, and mint-meta-debian. I decided to reinstall these packages which of course removed foomatic-db-engine. I wanted to know if this was the proper way to boot 3.0.0-1 and if I broke anything in the process, such as future updates or printing or anything else. Thanks in advance.
Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
3.2 isn't even complete in Sid, but it's getting there. Most of the packages are up to date, but still waiting on a big one: gnome-shell.

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
The "apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx" is just what I needed, but I had to write "sudo" first (and enter password of course)to get it to work. Lets see if I get a screen after reboot, or if it borks my system like when i tried it through software manager.lleiria wrote:I did a second upgrade in my home desktop, with LMDE freshly installed with the latest respin, and with nvidia drivers, and once again after booting I entered in a tty prompt.
This time it was easier to solve. I followed clem's instructions to remove nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-glx, but the system told me they were not installed (Ididn't understood why, as nvidia drivers were installed and running well before upgrading). So I did an 'apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx' and all was installed. I rebooted and now all seems to run well.
But once again it was not a smooth upgrade. And there is a lot of people who has nvidia graphics cards. I know a lot of people that would panic if this happened to them. To clem's attention.

Nope, it borked my system, had to boot using the old kernal. Time to give up on Nvidia drivers or is there another solution?
Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
Hi everybody! I'm very new to Linux and this forum as well. Sorry if I posted my quetsion to the wrong place.
Yet I'm facing a problem now with my external hard drive. I found something similar in a thread about Update Pack 1: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 24#p446224 I'm having tha same problem: I repeated steps in a post and got same error - if i safely remove my drive my LMDE falls into black screen with kernel panic and I can't do anything - only press power button to force shutdown. Not always but usually it breaks. If I firstly unmount my drive using Nautilus (press a triangle sign near my drive) and then remove - no errors.
So what can I do with this problem? Is it solved? Is there any solution?

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
The most recent nVidia drivers in the LMDE repos (283, i believe) do not support 3.0+ kernels. If you switch the repos to Debian Testing temporarily, you can install the upgraded nVidia drivers (290), which do support 3.0 and above. Install nvidia-glx, nvidia-settings, and nvidia-xconfig. Then, open a terminal and enter sudo nvidia-xconfig. Reboot to the new 3.0.0-1 kernel and enjoy nVidia goodness.Servicetech wrote:Nope, it borked my system, had to boot using the old kernal. the beauty of linux is that the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want it to go.
Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
I installed Linux Mint Debian (2.6.32-5-686) on an IBM ThinkCenter PC last week and have been unable to use Update Manager nor can I install software.
Trying to install Update Pack 3, clicking on "Install Update", I get:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
When I enter 'sudo dpkg --configure -a, I get a repidly scrolling loop too swift to read nor can I yet grab a sample. But this should give an idea of my predicament. Anybody know how to solve this?
Geoffrey

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
servicetech,
I'll sugget U install smxi:
http://smxi.org/
read the tutorial and learn how to use it, then let the script take care of your drivers and kernels.
Have used this script since my first install on setp 2010 and never, repeat never had problems.
cheers

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
I did as @proxima_centauri said in first post of this topic. But when I opened Softwares Sources(in synaptic & update manager) appears only three sources,it's missing deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import, but if I taste "gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" in Terminal it's in that file,I mean in the sources.list(/etc/apt)-gedit all four sources!
Is it any problem with that? Should I worry about this?
L.E.: I apologize for my English

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
The sources.list you posted in your last post is correct and everything should be working fine with it. However, for future reference, try opening Software Sources again. I assume that previously you were looking at the "Other Software" tab. If you look under the "Linux Mint Software" tab, you will see checkboxes for the different sub-directories under the Mint repo (main, upstream, import, backport, and romeo). You should see the first three (main, upstream, and import) checked, which matches what you have listed in the Mint repo line from the sources.list.pretender wrote:But when I opened Softwares Sources(in synaptic & update manager) appears only three sources,it's missing deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import, but if I taste "gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" in Terminal it's in that file,I mean in the sources.list(/etc/apt)-gedit all four sources!

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
This is just my input......While these updates and so-called improvements seem to be great 'n all, whoever is working on these is overlooking the small things that make LMDE so good....when you make these upgrades to file systems, you've lost the administrative abilities to tweak and/or use administer privilages to go into and make changes to the file system.....the new kernel, 3.2.0-1 you all keep telling me that works so well on your systems, doesn't work to well with mine....and like I related in another post, every persons machine is different whether it be 32 or 64 bit, AMD or Intel, each one has different characteristics in make up. My Dell laptop is Intel based and LMDE will work and a lot of the programs I run on it will work up to kernel 3.0.0-1.....Xiphos 3.1.4 Bible program won't work on kernel 3.2.0-1, it will start briefly, then close, but you all keep telling me that my file system is corrupt, it's not!!
In the new kernel, you aren't able to change the size of the panel bar or change the font size, the admin abilities for file system changes and/or sharing....to take ownership of file for sharing, is gone....I don't like the solid color bar (panel).....I personally don't have the programing ability to make tweaks like you all, to the files system, and most times wouldn't have the patients for it....I like being able to adjust the opacity of the panel like with gnome2. I realize you put in a lot of work on this stuff, but you need to take into consideration of program compatibility with all these improvements.....and in some cases, you actually are making this particular distro, harder to use, because not everyone really wants to go through all tweaking and stuff to use it....I'd just like for the devs to listen to what's being said and take into consideration, all these things.....Please..................cheers
Andrew

Re: Update Pack 3 Released! Update Information
I would like to know if "latest" repos are mirrored (at Greece for my case), or do we have to point at *.linuxmint.com ?
