Frequency of package updates?

Post by paulbary »

I'm running the 9/2011 LMDE at update pack 3 ... my sources.list came from this forum and is:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

My question is the that all I seem to have gotten over the past several weeks is a couple of Mint utility updates .... this seems out of line with my past experiences with Debian Testing which had a regular flow of package updates. Should I be concerned about some misconfgiuration on my part?

Thanx,

Paul

I highly recommend reading the documentation that explains the mint Debian repositories.

the beauty of linux is that the rabbit hole goes as deep as you want it to go.

Here is the first blog post that gives the description of Mint's Debian repos. A few more recent posts also give some other info about the update packs.

In short, if you are pointing at the debian.linuxmint.com latest repos, you aren't getting updates directly from Debian testing, but instead a frozen snapshot of Debian testing that is updated every 4-6 weeks. When you get them, these updates have already been tested by members of the community who are pointing to Debian testing and those pointing to debian.linuxmint.com incoming repos, so most of the issues should be worked out by then. If you want more frequent updates, with the chance of more frequent breakage, you can change your sources.list to point to one of these other repos.

Thanks .... since I saw some Mint utility updates "dribble" thru, I was wondering if Debian updates would "dribble" thru as well ... apparently what I'm seeing is normal ...

Hey guys! I know we are by far less in numbers than the Ubuntu Mint users and that the team is working on that right now but I would just like to ask a question. When are we going to see any updates? I had none since...3 weeks ago I think! Are we going to see any updates any time soon? 1 week? 2 days? 3 months? When? Thanks in advance

Just to chime in, and please forgive a newbie to LMDE question.

I thought most security updates in testing were due to packages migrating from sid, with only the rare package from deb http://security.debian.org testing/updates main contrib non-free

So are we missing those security updates at the price of a more stable and slow update process via the mint repos?

Also since as I understand it, the UP 4 is being held until gnome 3 is stabilized, and resources are being diverted at present for LM-ubuntu, maybe the documentation (such as it is in the blog post) should not promise monthly updates, but "frequent" updates when packages are ready. I have wasted some time the last 6 days trying to figure how I configured my repos wrong, before finally figuring out that the team just has not released an update after finding this thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=185&t=82991. I suppose you could say I should have followed the forum, but I was just checking in on the blog which seemed to be the source for official communication between the team and users.
