BP, what you want is kde4.8.3 in all its glory
http://qt-kde.debian.net/ (it's basically the same procedure we follow when we grabbed 4.7.2/4 a while back)
it says in the mail that it's mainly targeted to sid but:
Users of debian testing might use them too, if apt-get/aptitude is not
complaining about dependency problems.
go, go and have lots of fun :wink: :wink:

Sweet! Thanks, zero. That's the source I used before but I didn't know how useful it would be now that Mint's on 4.7.4. Being able to use it with wheezy is even better news than I expected! I know last time I had to go sid first to use it but I'll definitely see if it's going to behave with testing or if it's going to be a fussy baby. I really hope baby's not fussy this time. 8)

- incoming is the repo that prepares and tests the UP before they are released to latest.
- it's dormant for the most part of the time (and during that time is an exact copy of latest);
- then 1-2 weeks before a new UP it wakes-up full of fresh new updates, we test them and eventually they will become the next stable UP.
- then incoming goes to sleep again until next rush hour.
pretty boring life :lol: :lol:

testing is

Code: Select all

## testing ##
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
# deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
# deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
# deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free
Quick question for you, zero. Should I uncomment the last three lines of the testing repos on a temp basis? And should any of the default Mint repos get commented out while checking out the testing repos? I'm about to add the KDE repo again but want to check this before I go on to that step.

BP, nahh, you should add the qt-kde repo to the others (as for packages.linuxmint is up to you really, it won't hurt being there but it won't do any good either :lol: )

but before you start make a backup of your system (clonezilla for example), i'm saying this because i tried it this morning and although i got no errors with the update the final result is far from satisfactory:
- 3 to 5 min to boot into kde (gnome boots just fine right after)
- after this looooong boot the system is unusable: every app takes several min to open and sometimes they just don't open
- at the same time gnome-shell behaves fine as always :shock:
- hardly is a hardware issue, the laptop has 3gig ram and a core2duo and ran kde before just dandy (but not this debian 4.8.3)
- might be just me, anyway better to warn you in advance :wink:

Sounds like a plan. The only rub is the backup, not so much because clonezilla doesn't seem to be in our repos (it sounds like it really should be) but because as I started the rebuild I found that I can no longer mount my external hard drive via usb. It looks like the kernel was compiled without something but I had to boot from my Mint 10 KDE USB drive just to do a manual backup. And of course I no longer carry my external hard drive since it's pretty useless for now. Oh well, I guess I'll just wait to run this upgrade.

One repo question:
I saw nothing with just adding your sources lines as is so I uncommented out the bottom three lines and got over 300 updates. Should I comment any of the default repos as I do that? I'm pretty worried about borking the system after being without my laptop for so long thanks to stupid human errors that killed the LCD.

ETA: Never mind the comment about clonezilla bot being in our repo. I hadn't understood how it worked until I did some checking.

it depends of what repos you had there before this addition

Code: Select all

inxi -r
please :lol:

I had already returned my repo list to the default list plus your testing list as pasted here. Here's my output to that command:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
           deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free
           deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
If I uncomment the commented lines my sources list looks like this:

Code: Select all

#deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free

## testing ##
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
 deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
 deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
 deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free
running apt-get upgrade gets me (in summary)

Code: Select all

843 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 293 not upgraded
and my inxi looks returns this:

Code: Select all

$ inxi -r
Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
           deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free
           deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
           deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
           deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
           deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free
Needless to say I'm not accepting any of those upgrades until I know I'm not sexually assaulting a pooch, especially since I'm more of a feline person myself.

BP,
the only ones you need are

Code: Select all

## testing ##
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free
you can leave the rest out.
as for the output :shock: i would be a bit worried about those 293 not upgraded;
- first i would be sure that /etc/apt/preferences was all set to 500;
- then i would run dist-upgrade instead of upgrade (of course you'll have some removals but they will a few only)

let us know :wink:

romeo == sid?
I thought you are looking for testers for "incoming" :)

And where to report the bugs? :-)

:wink: nahh romeo is the unstable part of packages.linuxmint (where Clem sometimes puts pkgs for testing purposes), sid, well, you know sid :lol:

testers? yes of course we need :wink: incoming is a quiet place for most of the time, only wakes-up a couple weeks before one UP but at that time it's a funny place to be.

bugs? we have always a special thread here in the forum for that (when incoming is open)

It looks like a fresh installed system you've dist-upgrated? All the updated packages have nothing to do with 'backport
romeo'. That are debian testing updates.

Change the mint line in your sources.list to:

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
Possibly some mint specific packages won't work with the testing sources. I lost all mintiness with it, but am happy
with a quite stressless testing xfce :)

why? fair enough backport has always been empty as far as i can remember (but exactly because of that there's no harm having it there) and if you are already running testing or sid makes all the sense (to me) to have romeo enabled (it's not more unstable than unstable :wink: )

defcon, one thing worries me tho :?
what's your /etc/apt/preferences?

I know a little programing ..

got a few questions as well regarding that ...

let us say that i update glade UI files to a newer version .... where would i send the changes ? by email ? in tar?

Thanx -- i would also like to be a more apart of the community .... is there any how to's that need doing ? or anything else that is needing helpers like the testing?

-------

OH ya and what about he Canadian English translations they seem to be missing .... How could i do that ? or where can i find that out ?

All right, new incoming repository mirror up and running..

Code: Select all

cp "latest/" "incoming/"
and it was almost done :lol:
So.. is there any milestone that needs to be reached in testing until we can begin hacking with incoming ? Or are we just waiting until the next UP gets so heavy it's worth releasing an ISO again ? :(
