Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
All went rather well for me with my config :ASRock H55M dual core intel i3 3.07ghz ,Nvidia gtx 460 and lmde x64 xfce
Had an issue with my graphic card driver but reinstalled it and all is well now
Similar problem' to GeneC's upon attempting to install mint menu.
Another problem i'm facing is about sound: only thing i can use is pulse audio any other option doesn't seem to produce any sound(played around with both the xfce mixer and the alsamixer) only anoyance about it : it ocasionaly makes some snake like noise
Other then what's listed above every thing seems to be working flawless for me.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
ok, this one is not fun
- from lmde-gnome i can't install xfce (not with the default settings)
apt install mint-meta-xfce is broken
apt install xfce4 breaks the system (removes all the xorg stack and nvidia)
- from lmde-gnome i can't install xfce (not with the default settings)
apt install mint-meta-xfce is broken

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
One important information: a thousand bugs that I have found in Cinnamon and Gnome 3 regarding font rendering, bad localization, etc. dissapeared when I cleaned up my home directory. I mean, when I deleted the old configuration files. It is expected since the change gnome 2 -> gnome 3 is huge. I had this problem in Archlinux also when I upgraded it. Maybe we need a warning about it when UP4 is installed.
Thanks,
Ronan

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
I found the fix to our problem. certian components of gnome didnt install properly so you use synaptic to install gnome or you can run sudo apt-get install gnome and that will give you the whole metapackage. however the draw back is that it installs alot of thing you may not usemorgan71 wrote:I have a similar problem; the applets are there, but they are invisible. When I click on the panel the menus open, but there are no icons diplayed on the panel.hellfire695 wrote:I'd like to add that several important applets such as my wireless and volume, accessibility do now appear in either cinnamon or gnome-shell and I cannot add a single shell extension.
on the lighter side i have mate working perfectly, though with all the removal it look like gnome in debian stable
Except for that, I haven't had any issues, so far. It's great to have the new desktops here! Good work!
is it just me or is cinnamon a touch slow?
also does anyone know bout the software center and will it be comming back for latest?
Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Thanks for sharing your solution. I tried it, but it didn't work. But then I re-installed gnome-icon-theme and that solved the problem!hellfire695 wrote:I found the fix to our problem. certian components of gnome didnt install properly so you use synaptic to install gnome or you can run sudo apt-get install gnome and that will give you the whole metapackage. however the draw back is that it installs alot of thing you may not use
Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Cinnamon is not working for me.
I had compiled Cinnamon 1.2.0 following forum instrucctions and it worked ok. I have updated today and cinnamon-setting did't work, it said GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.cinnamon' does not contain a key named 'menu-hover-delay', and althoug I had installed cinnamon 1.3.1 from Synaptic, if I run cinnamon --versions it said 1.2.0.
So, I deleted all files of cinnamon of 5th of February and older, when I compiled Cinnamon 1.2.0, then I remove completely Cinnamon 1.3.1 with synaptic and I reinstalled it again.
When I try to start session with cinnamon a error screen happens. If I run cinnamon --replace from a terminal this error occurs:
GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.cinnamon' does not contain a key named 'number-workspaces'
Any idea?
Thanks
EDIT
I install a fresh LMDE from DVD in a new partition and then a updated to UP4. After this I could install Cinnamon 1.3.1, so I suposse the GLib-GIO-ERROR is related with updating a compiled cinnamon 1.2.0 using synaptic.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
zerozero i think what happened when u tryed to install xfce4 is normal i recall just about every xorg file got removed and replaced also the nvidea driver got removed and upon restart a new version took its place; not sure what happened for you exactly but i remember my sys fetched smth like 1215 packs at a bit over 1gb total size(as matter of fact not sure if anything was left unreplaced on my system really )
Also a ton configuration files got altered and was asked what to do about them(as i usualy do i chose the package meintener's version to be used) i'm guessing that one was pretty much equivalent to cleaning my old config files and generating new ones.
Also tested cinnamon to my surprise it installed without a problem and was able to play around with and it seems about as responsive and error free as xfce this one may actually be a worthy gnome2 successor...(not for me thou i chose to remain on the mintified' xfce boat for as long as it's crew passes the sanity check(no lousy attempts to pull a unity/gdm3 like wheel reinvention trick)

[Solved] UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Update from UP3 to UP4.
The install went well no issues until I tried to logout.
Went to blank screen with cursor.
Hitting Ctl-F1 got me to a text screen and I as able to reboot.
The next logout went fine.
After the reboot my wireless network was dropped.
Checked Config and all was set correctly so I did a reboot and no network.
I deleted my "Wireless Connection 1" then made a new one.(I have WEP and double checked configuration).
The Wireless connection appears to be active (as indicated from panel) but I cannot connect to internet or ping anyone.
Rebooted to previous kernel and wireless connection works fine.
No solution found yet. (FYI, I did check to make sure there is no active firewall currently).
(See UPDATE: below)
Comments: I really like the Gnome Shell! The large icons and easy manipulation through windows is aesthetically pleasing, intuitive and very easy to use.
Tried Cinnamon and like it but prefer the shell. Thanks for all the long hours and hard work, this is going to be a GREAT addition to the Mint collection - Thank You!

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Can I do this and if all works ok switch back to latest afterward? Just so I can go ahead and get cinnamon but then get the more stable version when it is ready?
Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
I update a LM XFCE UP3 linux, and everything working. I dont see cinnamon and mate in synaptic.
Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
I've installed cinnamon and UP4, and everything seems to work fine, except for a problem with the network manager in cinnamon (the problem doesn't exist in gnome classic).
When I tried to log onto my wireless network I typed the network password wrong, but it never let me type in the password again even though it obviously was wrong. I tried to go into the network manager to edit or delete the network but could not do anything. I choose my network from the drop down menu and immediately got a message that it couldn't connect. I could not hit the configure button as it went to fast, and because it was greyed out. I logged out and fixed it in Gnome Classic, and can edit my network in the network manager in cinnamon now, but it was still kind of annoying.

CINNAMON AND LIBREOFFICE : A BUG
Whenever I open a LibreOffice (version 3.4.5 in repositories) document with a double-click on it in a folder, the open document is not shown as "open window" in the bottom bar.
I can see and access this open windows only through pointing my mouse to the upper left corner of the screen.

Whenever I open a LibreOffice (version 3.4.5 in repositories) document with a double-click on it in a folder, the open document is not shown as "open window" in the bottom bar.
I can see and access this open windows only through pointing my mouse to the upper left corner of the screen.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Updating a straight (well, almost) LMDE UP3 install as I write. 1.2 GB download and currently installing. Only thing I've noticed about the install so far is that there are several 100 (thousand?) errors of the exact same type scrolling down the terminal window:
Update: Yup, on third thought, that's exactly what's causing this error. Shouldn't be a problem then.
This repeats 6x between each "Preparing to replace [package name] - Unpacking replacement [package name] and every "Setting up..." and "Installing...". Not that worried about it since it's probably due to a tweak I made when LMDE was first installed to get Flash working properly or something like that. We'll see...ERROR: ld.so object '/user/lib64/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc/memcpy-preload.so' from /etc/ld.so.preload cannot be preloaded: ignored
Update: Yup, on third thought, that's exactly what's causing this error. Shouldn't be a problem then.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Upadate to UP 4 went well for the most part. Had to remove that /etc/so.preload file that was causing the error before things would work correctly (it was a modification to fix non-synced/distorted audio when playing Flash videos). Also had to remove Compiz and all it's dependencies before I could boot into Gnome or Cinnamon.. The only things I see so far is the Mint-Z theme is not installed (Adwaita is the only GTK3 theme available I believe and is default) so it's all green icons and blue everything else. And "Open as administrator (root?)" is missing from Nautilus and the "nautlius-gksu" package is missing from the repositories although I understand that "nautilus-gksu" is no longer being developed(?). Easily worked around--just mentioning.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Updated from linux-image-3.0.0.1-686-pae, to this image.
Removed compiz as a start up preference first, and then launched UP4.
Everything appears to be working, without any (not one) issue(s). Installed Cinnamon (my preference after the GS new car smell wore off) and now ready to tackle the 64-bit version of LMDE with an older kernel.
Very nice job Clem. AND to all that post here. Thank you - your posts help.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
Updated to Pack 4 on my Aspire One netbook using the 2.6.38-2-686 kernel which I've used for quite awhile with no issues. Rebooted with no serious issues. Only issue I have run into so far is after a while the Synaptics SynPs/2 touchpad quits working, and can be repeated after rebooting so there is some bug happening there. No huge issue, I plugged in a Logitech usb mouse to keep going.
Update - Tried 2.6.39-2-686-PAE & 3.0.0-1-686-PAE kernels, no issue with touchpad. Everything seems fine.
Tried 3.2.0-1-686-PAE kernel, no issue with touchpad. However, this kernel does not show a battery being present in the netbook.
Update - Installed Cinnamon, no problems with install. Using the 3.2.0 kernel Cinnamon shows the battery. If I log out and change to Gnome or gnome classic, no battery.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
UP3 to UP4, LMDE 64 bits
As I have a dual boot with Win7, it is necessary to change the configuration file for the bios clock in order to avoid a timeshift in Windows:
sudo gedit /etc/default/rcS
# assume that the BIOS clock is set to UTC time (recommended)
UTC=no
It was initially set to UTC=yes
The problem was already identified in UP3.

Re: UPDATE PACK 4 FEEDBACK THREAD
After playing with various environments (Gnome Shell, Classic Gnome, Cinnamon) I have come to the conclusion I do not like either of them (have yet to try Mate). This is largely because of the much higher system load they present (and - except Classic - they're too slow). Obviously, this three year old computer (!) has met his match. The internal temperatures are on average around ten degrees (centigrade) higher then before, which I find disturbing. If Mate does the same, I'll need another distro.
In kernel 3.2.0, the problem of the kernel panic on dismounting an external drive seems to be fixed. Unfortunately, the graphic distortions that made me go back to 2.6.38 are still there.
Edit: on further investigation, the higher load and higher temperatures appear to be mostly caused by Gwibber. Without that, the temperatures are only a few degrees higher.
