Hi,

Am trying to switch between mate & cinnamon sessions on: linuxmint-201204-mate-cinnamon

From what I gathered, username "mint" + hit-enter for password should do the trick.. No Joy.. :(

Tried Mint, mint, both as passwords as well.. Used root, in case that could help..

Any ideas?

Many thanks!

EDIT: Sorry! I just noticed this is in the main edition section. :-/

I'd like to help you but it worked for me. I guess I'm mostly posting to say that it doesn't seem to be a universal bug or anything.

You might want to check your media.

http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/69

"Note: If the liveCD doesn't log you in automatically, there might be something wrong with your CD. Boot from the CD and use the "Check the integrity of the CD" option."

At least, try to see if something comes up after a check?

So far, I think the newest Mint LMDE w/ Cinnamon looks really great. I logged out and switched the session to Cinnamon to test and it worked for me.

Oh yeah, another thing, I noticed another poster saying the 'blank' password didn't work. I think it should login automatically as mentioned in the Mint FAQ link. It did for me.

However, you both should post the complete info. I am trying the release of Cinnamon/MATE AMD64 LMDE edition. Is yours Amd64 or x86? That might help just in case. But, maybe something is going with the media you're using or something else. :(

Hi,

Thanks telenux for your considered tips!

I am using lmde linuxmint-201204-mate-cinnamon-dvd-64bit.iso for an amd64 bit. Am booting via a usb rather than a disk - should it make a difference?

After logging out, it just would not let me back in..

I'd love to try the cinnamon version on lmde as my computer is a few years old, and not getting younger.. ;)

Is there a way, perhaps, to make cinnamon the 1st environment it loads on the 1st login..?

Many thanks!

I'd rather select an automatic login and just use MATE as the default. Anybody know how to do that? I can't get it to work.

The main difference for me is how fast the boot-up is for the iso on a usb drive. I love how fast it is compared to a DVD.

As for your problem, I'm not sure what's going on. I don't have an issue logging off and in again. As I previously mentioned, I can choose a different session without a password issue.

It's strange you are having trouble. I'll have to boot up my usb stick again to see how it looks. You said you checked the integrity of the media, right? How did you burn the image onto the usb stick? I used unetbootin. If you click to log out, what exactly happens?

hi,

Yes, it is strange indeed. DVD/usb should not make a different usage experience..

Yup, I used unetbootin to make the bootable usb - like I do with other distros.

After I click logout, I get the screen that allows me to login again. I can choose a desktop environment, and have a reboot option.. Al looks pretty normal, though the reboot doesn't actually do anything..
I did download another iso, in case somehow the iso was corrupt - no joy either..

Cheers!

Well, for one thing, don't choose 'reboot' when you're using live media. Just change to the session you want and choose 'log in/out' or whatever the option is. See what happens.

oh! lol

I log on/out. The reboot isn't rebooting from the log out screen.. Apologies for misunderstandings.

Cheers!

I think I'll have to install and try cinnamon that way..

A long way around, however am attempting a change from ubuntu here.. Really don't like their direction..

Cheers for attempting to help!

You could try replying to see if it works then?

Let me know at what point, it's not working:

I logged into Cinnamon (using Live media right now). This is the attempt to change the session to MATE.

1) Menu -> 'middle icon' selected -> "Log out - Leave the session' -> 'Log out of this system now? - 'You are currently logged in as 'mint'' ....etc. etc. choose "log out" (highlighted in green)

2) type in 'mint' in the space and choose 'Change Session' and then click the 'MATE" selection. Then hit your Enter key.

It should give you a pop up message that you are going to change the Session but do you want it to be temporary (just for that particular session) or permanent because the default is Cinnamon.

Choose whatever you want. I chose the 'just for this session.'

3) screen for me flickers and then it has a full-screen shell with text I can't read in time...

4) MATE desktop appears

Hi telenux - thanks for your insistence!

Followed your details and noticed that I changed users - not loged out - duh!

After doing the logout, user = mint + hit enter on pass worked perfectly!

Mind, testing the cinnamon environment is well worth waiting for. A cool combo of mate & kde elements.. Hopefully I'll manage to set it to default in the install.. ;)

Many thanks again - and all the best!
