Cannot install LMDE: no boot from DVD or USB

Is there a smaller "core" LXDE that is small enough to fit onto a CD? I have a DVD of the full version that works on my newer laptop but will not from my older laptop. I wold like both to be running same distro - the older laptop belongs to my wife. This would make ongoing maintenance somewhat easier.

I have installed Linux distros to the older laptop using CD's with no trouble.

The older laptop will not boot at all from USB (no provision in BIOS).

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding you; the Linux Mint 12 LXDE is only available as a CD image. Download from here: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=98 Is the DVD you have perhaps of some magazine, where it is bundled with other distros and applications onto a DVD?

I am sorry. The misunderstanding was my fault.

I meant to say LMDE. This is too large for CD.

LMDE only comes in DVD version. But you can use things like PLOP to boot from USB on computers that don't support booting from USB. PLOP can be put on floppy, CD, or even installed as boot manager to your computer. http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html

What operating system do you currently have installed on the laptop?

Thank your for the PLOP info. This should help.

I have PCLinuxOS on the old laptop. LXDE, IIRC.

Using Linux Mint LMDE on my newer laptop.

You may be able to add PLOP as an option in your GRUB boot menu on PCLinuxOS.
