BACKGROUND:
I own a desktop with a GIGABYTE motherboard and AWARD BIOS. The HDD started with Windows 7. I decided to delete the dedicated Windows 7 OS and replace the OS with LMDE 2012 64-bit xfce.

PROBLEM:
When I press F12 during start up to manually choose the boot order in the BIOS the keyboard and mouse become disabled and I am unable to choose and option. So I end up reseting the computer. So I instead just set the boot order in the menu when I press F9 instead and the computer ends up choosing the CD/DVD option automatically when I install a LIVE Linux DVD. (DVDs are the only mediums I use for Linux distro isos)

QUESTION:
Does anyone on this forum know how to fix the problem I have with the keyboard and mouse when I press F12 on startup?

Are they wireless mouse & keyboard by chance? I had this issue with Debian. Had to use a wired keyboard and mouse to get through the install.

No, the mouse and keyboard are wired and usb.

I noticed on the desktop the old input plugs for mouse and keyboard.

• How are the hard drivers connected, do you have an MBR on the first bootaabe drive/1st partition..
• and the boot order, do you put CD first or do you start with the hard drives (device that will have the OS installed into..)
• Sata or Pata drives ?
• Any devices you don't need, such as a floppy scan on boot ?

Is that the menu to choose from drives? You can set that up in the BIOS itself, you know?

Or is the boot drive chosen and just can't find your Linux/GRUB?

I found the solution to the problem.

The bios has a setting for the mouse and keyboard under Integrated Peripherals.

To activate enable the mouse and keyboard.
