will not boot after uninstalling cairo dock

I have LMDE 64bit on my computer. It runs with multiple hard drives (LMDE being on one of 3). After installing LMDE 13, I finally got grub to recognize and sort out the HD's (win7 being on one...another just for storage). Anyway, I was messing around with using docks on the LMDE desktop and loaded Cairo Dock. After some use, I decided to remove the program and in the process the computer reverted to a black screen that prompts me for my username and password. Upon restart, I get grub but am led back to the black screen with username/password prompt. Question: How do I navigate my system back to the point of booting successfully from grub to LMDE? Thanks for any advice help ahead of time.

First, login at the command line, then type lightdm. If that works report back and we will try to make it permanent.
