LMDE did not creat Swap

Post by selvarium »

I had a Win7 on my Lenovo disktop with one partition. I made 3 partitions using gparted; one for win7, one for LMDE and one for data files. Then, I installed LMDE onto second one. However, it did not created Swap partition. Do I need to create manually a Swap partition? see the output of fdisk -l below

Code: Select all

ahmadsrr@ahmad-lenovo ~ $ sudo fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders, total 976773168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x3d2726ca

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1   *        2048      206847      102400    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda2          206848   123086847    61440000    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT
/dev/sda3       123086848   327886847   102400000   83  Linux
/dev/sda4       327886848   976773119   324443136    7  HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

How much RAM do you have? I don't run a SWAP partition with 6GB of RAM. IMO, it's not needed for average desktop use if you have 4GB or more RAM. Unless you want hibernation, which is a whole different can of worms. If you want to add a swap partition you will need to back up your data and boot from a Live DVD/USB. Then you can resize one of the other partitions and create a new swap partition. MAKE SURE TO BACKUP YOUR DATA BEFORE YOU MESS WITH YOUR PARTITIONS. Preferably a complete disk image.

I have 4GB. Most probably I will not need SWAB but for few cases I may need it. I would add swab partition using the method you proposed.
Thanks,
