suspend is not really suspended

Hello,

On my PC, LMDE up to date, but since the begining (2 years) when I go to suspend the computer looks suspended as only the power led is on and I have to hit the power button to wake up the PC, but the fans are still running and when opening the computer during this time it appears the hard disks are a little hot as will as the CPU and GPU. it is not really suspended then.

I'd like to find a solution to that.

here is the log when going to sleep mode. It seems to be only the network going to sleep actually. The waking up is a much bigger log. I'll copy it here if you need.

Code: Select all

Apr 27 12:25:53 desktop NetworkManager[3309]: <info> sleep requested (sleeping: no enabled: yes)

Install libupower-glib1 and upower (If you have Libupower1 uninstall it)

Then run this command in a terminal to see if the computer sleeps properly

Code: Select all

dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.UPower /org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
If it works turn it into a script (make sure you make it executable) and have it run after a certain amount of time, not sure which desktop environment you are running, I'm using KDE which has a setting in systems-settings to run any script you wish.

Thanks Bu99zy.

Unfortunatelly that doesn't help.

The right package were already installed…
Your line result is:

Code: Select all

method return sender=:1.21 -> dest=:1.252 reply_serial=2
That doesn't help much either.

By the way I am running gnome3.4
and the motherboard bios has been updated.

Any other ideas will be welcome !

Hi, Anyone has an idea for me?
it is a shame to let the computer run all the time, and the boot time is quite long, so I avoid.

Thanks for your help

This may not make you happy, but it may be a firmware or linux kernel issue. Suspend is dicey. I have an old laptop, and it did not suspend properly either. After searching the forums, and googling, I tried many of the suggestions. It took time but I got it! That lappy is long gone, and I've forgotten the exact lines I tried. They probably wouldn't work for you anyway. But the whole episode put this thought into my mind, "if you try hard enough, you'll get it to suspend." Jump forward a few years, now I have a new tower Dell 9100. I has Windows 7 and suspends perfectly. I add a couple of linux partitions, but they won't suspend. No problem, I think, I'll go at it hard and figure it out. After beating my head against the wall on and off for weeks, no progress. In desperation I even call Dell, but as soon as I utter the word, "linux," they sound confused. Finally, I give up. It's a tower after all and I can do other things. In my case the log shows it all going down properly, hitting sleep, then immediately waking back up again. Some months later, for no particular reason, I hit suspend; it works perfectly! I boot into another linux distro; all perfect. Nothing I did except keep the machine and firmware updated. Somewhere along the line somebody included this machine -- probably in the firmware or the kernel modules.

My only suggestion for you is to check whether your specific machine is on a "suspends correctly with linux" list. There are a couple at least for laptops, just google. Good luck.

Let's hope I'll be lucky with an update then, as after googling a lot… nothing and both firmware and linux are updated…
My problem sounds exactly as yours. The logs show everything going to sleep, but it wakes up instantly once done. It reminds me of my first son :?

Thanks anyway

I have had similar issues with suspend. I had been using Ubuntu prior to the introduction of UNITY and suspend worked perfectly with no hacks. The first release of Ubuntu with UNITY and suspend has never worked since. UNITY just was not for me, I tried several distrose, with little success with suspend. I am not sure why functionality would disappear, but that is what happened for me. I have settled on Linux Mint, currently running Release 15 and suspend is not working for me. I am running on the following HW:
Dell Vostro 1500
8 GB RAM
300 GB HD
nVideo graphic card.

I wished I had better news.

Hi,

I actually think it is more related to the kernel.
as with same distro, different behavior for different kernel.
The oldest one the best…
