201403-Mate install different from live DVD

Post by 2jcm »

When booting a live DVD in Vbox, it uses the Mint logo on a black screen (just like Mint 16) and then a nice green log-in screen. After installing Mate on 2 different computers, when booting It just shows multiple pages of white text on a black background, the same on shut down. I'm using auto log-in. The 2 computers have multiple distros on them. One computer is in my sig file, the other is a HP dv2000 with a 128GB SSD, 2gigs of memory and 4 distros. Is there a way to just get the Mint logo while booting?

Check if your /etc/default/grub file has this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

Yes Monsta, it has that "quiet splash" line. After it loads, all other aspects of the distro are working fine. I've got Mint Mate 13 & 16 on both computers and this LMDE looks identical.

The splash screen is displayed by Plymouth, and that's a buggy software that doesn't always work as intended.

Just in case, you might check if all Plymouth-related packages are installed:

Code: Select all

apt search ~iplymouth
but I think they are. This is just Plymouth itself behaving badly.

Thanks Monsta, you must be right. I re-installed Plymouth, P-drm, P-themes-mint, and P-x11 through Synaptic on my laptop, and it didn't help at all.
On my old test box, I CLI removed Plymouth*, then installed through Synaptic. Same result.
