Failed to load session "cinnamon"

Failed to load session "cinnamon"

Hi,
After rebooting my LMDE, I get
Failed to load session "cinnamon" with the only option of Log Out.

The /.xsessions-errors files indicates
Failed to Connect to the VirtualBox kernel service
(I have never installed VirtualBox) and
x-session-manager: WARNING : Unable to find required component 'cinnamon'
x-session-manager: WARNING : Unable to find required component 'cinnamon-screensaver'
x-session-manager: WARNING : Unable to find required component 'nemo-autostart'

The last thing I did was installing dropbox (which did not work) and run
dropbox autostart y

I've tried with recovery mode and can log in as root, but if I try satrx
then I get the same message.
What can I do?

Found the problem: I'm using MATE and have not cinnamon installed. Yet cinnamon was the default.
