Goes BLACK after LinuxMint logo

Postby kaddy on Sun Dec 26, 2010 4:44 am

Hey All
I have seen a few people complain of the same problem I am having with the latest debian edition of mint but i havn't found a Forum post yet....

Basically what happens is, When you boot the Live Cd, and choose to start Mint, it goes through text as it normally does, but then goes black and stays that way. I have also tried
booting in compatibility mode and the same thing happens, although I have saved a log file with the following errors

"note. Linux Mint 10 ubuntu version works fine, so does all ubuntu versions on my hardware... so it must be a bug in the debian edition with certain hardware... strange"

But the following error says that Vesa kernel modesetting driver is in use and refuses to load. here is the full report

Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

I have also tried running "Xorg -configure" and "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
with no luck
why is it even trying to load VESA for my graphics? I have an Nvidia 7800 GTX. It should be loading Nouveau surely??? I did modprobe it and saw
that nouveau was indeed loaded up..... this is weird

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

kaddy,

Kernel modesetting was an issue in Ubuntu 10.04 and LinuxMint9 for some hardware configurations. Ubuntu's solution for 10.10 was to disable it for all hardware, if I recall correctly. I also remember seeing it as an issue in non-Ubuntu/debian distributions. A solution would be to use the nomodeset boot parameter

In another thread I posted this

It sounds like you may have stumbled into the Kernel Modesetting (KMS) issue. It can manifest in several ways. Check this post. First try the nomodeset boot parameter outlined in the post and its links before trying the commands for specific hardware.

The link in the quote will take you to directions, if needed, on doing this, and also on how to make the setting permanent.

kaddy,

at the time I originally replied to your post I had not tried the newest LMDE. Since then I have burnt two DVDs of it, both work fine on a Toshiba laptop at work. Both respond on my HP laptop in the same manner you experienced. I followed the instructions in this thread to get the liveCD to boot. It does happen to relate to the nomodeset boot parameter.

viewtopic.php?f=42&t=62471&p=358943#p358943

I have not re-installed LMDE, so I do not know what the performance would be if installed with nomodeset made permanent.
