I had problems with my former system and decided to install a fresh one. Why not try something different? So I made a Squeeze netinstall with xfce and immediately added the LMDE sources.
Only glitches were that I had to install mintupdate-debian and the pubkey for the repos to work and updates to be installed.
Now I have an even lighter (rolling) Debian running that gives me increased stability of latest testing without lots of additional software that I did not use and otherwise would have uninstalled. Also I prefer standard xfce4.8 over the mintified version.
