boot failure after update

Hi
I have had some problems with no sound from my soundcard and problems with the auto update system not working, so up to this point, had not installed any updates . With a view to solving my sound issue, I attempted to update some pulseaudio files as advised in my 'no sound' thread. I used the synaptic package updater, I think I ended up updating all of the out of date files.
I now cannot get into Mint, neither the usual option or the recovery mode options will boot up. Both get to the 'black screen' where the start up scripts appear and run, but in both cases, this ends with a prompt for 'login'. I did not set and do not have login details, I have only password and host name, these do not work?
I tried to follow this lost password tutorial, but my 'edit' screen does not have any lines beginning with 'kernel'
Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu (if it does not show)
Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
Press e for edit.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with kernel and press the e key.
Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
Press Enter and then press b to boot your system.
Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd yourusername
Set your new password.
Restart your system.
Is there something missing from my system?
If anybody has any ideas I would love to hear them..
