boot failure after update

Hi

I have had some problems with no sound from my soundcard and problems with the auto update system not working, so up to this point, had not installed any updates . With a view to solving my sound issue, I attempted to update some pulseaudio files as advised in my 'no sound' thread. I used the synaptic package updater, I think I ended up updating all of the out of date files.
I now cannot get into Mint, neither the usual option or the recovery mode options will boot up. Both get to the 'black screen' where the start up scripts appear and run, but in both cases, this ends with a prompt for 'login'. I did not set and do not have login details, I have only password and host name, these do not work?

I tried to follow this lost password tutorial, but my 'edit' screen does not have any lines beginning with 'kernel'

Reboot your computer / Turn your computer on.
Hold down the Shift key at the start of the boot process to enable the GNU GRUB boot menu (if it does not show)
Press ESC at the GNU GRUB prompt.
Press e for edit.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the line that begins with kernel and press the e key.
Go to the very end of the line and add rw init=/bin/bash
Press Enter and then press b to boot your system.
Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.
Type in passwd yourusername
Set your new password.
Restart your system.

Is there something missing from my system?

If anybody has any ideas I would love to hear them..

I had a suggestion in my 'no sound' thread, that probably my install is now corrupted and I may be better off reinstalling. Before I do this I was wondering if this tutorial:
http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/482

could be used from the mint live cd (dvd) to help restore the corrupted packages?

No Scotty, i don't think so. Let us take a look back. You had the error

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgl1-mesa-dri : Breaks: xserver-xorg-core (< 2:1.10.2-2) but 2:1.7.7-9 is to be installed
E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
This, with some informations by your side, could have been solved. But it seems like you tried some things which ended in
this error:

Code: Select all

Linux Mint Debian Edition hal tty1hal login:
Nobody knows what you have done to get this result and it seems like you too don't know what you have done to get it.
The result is very strange and i think the way to go explained in the tutorial won't fix the problem. If you want to try it try
and if it helps, please let us know

I think I will now end up reinstalling, so I might try it later when I have more time, nothing to lose at this point! Thanks for all the advice, it is much appreciated!
