LMDE: Help with installation on a HP laptop (screen & wifi)

Postby Troken on Sat Jan 07, 2012 7:33 am

Hi, yesterday I finally decided to replace Windows Vista with LMDE 64bit Gnome (201109) on 5 years old HP dv6500. I have installed LMDE before and I'm very pleased with it, but can not handle it this time. I have searched and googled, but all solutions seem to be for the ordinary Linux Mint, and not LMDE.

Firstly the screenresolution:
The laptop has a 16:10 screen, but the resolution is standard 4:3, thus giving a stretched screen. No Hardware drivers icon anyware for the Nvidia card. The settings for screen resolution only gives options for 1024x768, 800x600 and 640x480.
I tried to follow the advice here, but its for Linux Mint 11.

Secondly the wifi:
The system needs restricted drivers I think, I played around with Ndiswrapper but without success. I checked this solution out, but it doesen't seem to apply to LMDE.

Also, when I click on the network icon in the lower right corner, there is no indication of a wifi-device there:

So now I reach out to you, the users, can anybody help?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I just ruined the whole installation, so never mind.

I think without knowledge of scripts, drivers, the terminal etc. there can be a hassle using LMDE, so im going for another distro with this computer. For me Linux should be easy to use, and if a simple thing as the screen resolution cant be solved easily, then it aint for me. It just gets too techie.
