Black screen booting a live cd

Postby z06gal on Thu Jan 12, 2012 11:07 pm

Hi all,

I just bought this laptop [Verix 17] and they [ZaReason] installed Mint 12 x64 on it for me. Well, I want to check out LMDE and it seems to boot to the cd....the Mint screen comes up that says it will reboot in 10 secs and that is it. I get a black screen and it doesn't do anything from there. I have never had this issue before so I am clueless as to what to do. Here is the output of lspci if it will help:

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I failed to add that I have tried 5 different iso's that work on another computer and the same thing occurs :wink:

Edit: I checked out etc/default/grub and wanted to ask if this looks right?

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset blacklist.nouveau=1 quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

I had the same issue, but I'm installing LMDE on a Macbook Pro (but it appears to be the same video card issue); try the following,

Boot from Live DVD

Select Start Linux Mint ('Compatibility Mode')

Hit the TAB Key to allow you to edit the boot options

Hit the backspace key twice (2x) to remove the two "--" hyphens

Next, type

Code: Select all
nomodeset --

Hit 'Enter'

Give it a shot and let me know what happens...

Hi sspott thanks for the solution to a similar problem I have been having.

I'm just new to the Linux world and I'm wanting to try a heap of distros and find the right one for my tastes, all (but straight Ubuntu) live cd istallations have the display resolution all buggered up, can only see half of the screen, managed to fiddle around on the Kubuntu and find the display settings which was a relief, Xubuntu hit F6 and check off nomodeset, Peppermint on the other hand I couldn't find anything to do with display resolution and no function command in the boot menu to change settings. Used your solution and I'm in :)

Thought I'd leave some feedback
Cheers,
