Update ruined GRUB, can't seem to fix

Post by plantperson »

Hello all,
I stupidly ran the Mint update yesterday and now GRUB doesn't work at all anymore. I've tried three different live discs to try to repair it, and they all give various error messages. Even Rescatux can't fix it. I am able to boot up the system by bypassing the bootloader via Super Grub Disk, but I don't want to have to boot my system from CD every time. Since I can boot into the system just fine, is there a good way I can restore GRUB from within?

If I run sudo grub-install /dev/sda (which is the correct drive, I'm sure) I get these errors:

Code: Select all

/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: This msdos-style partition label has no post-MBR gap; embedding won't be possible!.
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: warn: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
/usr/sbin/grub-setup: error: will not proceed with blocklists.

there's a work-around here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/441941 which might sort out your problem - or at least help further diagnosis.

This machine doesn't have Windows on it, though, that's one oddity of this MS-DOS error. There's only two partitions, a linux swap (sda1) and and ext4 (sda2).

I may just have go to back to regular Mint...alas.
